Dog Days of Summer from the Senior Writing Group
Senior Writing Submission - August 2019
Given the August theme “Dog Days of Summer,” the Senior Writing Group wrote a variety of pieces, each with a unique personal interpretation. One stood out from the rest: Laurie Walker’s piece focused on the dog’s perspective! Read it and imagine…
Hi, my name is Ben, and I'm here to discuss the so-called Dog Days of Summer.
I live in a nice house in a great neighborhood with my people, and here's what I do on a very hot day.
Oh, good, they're gone to work, so now I have time for myself.
Right now I'm under the forsythia busy in the back yard. I have a big, cool hole in here and this is where I spend some time when I get hot. It's like a dark green cave.
There's a tub of water by the house, right beside that long rubber snake that squirts water at you. He and I play a lot.
Next door is my friend Max. I can just squeeze under a corner of the fence to get into his yard. I'm on my way over there now. Oh-oh, wait a minute, gotta scratch, gotta scratch, gotta scratch. Okay, through the hole -- oh-oh, gotta cut down on the snacks, it's getting to be a tight fit. Anyway, let me back for Max. He has a nice dog door so he can get in and out whenever he wants.
Max is my best friend, he also has a swimming pool in his yard. On a day like today we can go in the pool and cool off in the shallow end, that's where the stairs are, can you imagine, stairs in a pool?
Max and I spend a lot of time in the pool. Sometimes we go into the house and have a snack from his doggy bowl.
His people get very upset because they can't figure out where all the water comes from. But his house is very cool, air-conditioning.
Sometimes we go back to my bush cave and dig a little in the dirt. That's where we are now, dirt flying.
That's how my dog days go, and I'm a dog, so tell me, what is all this talk about Dog Days of Summer? Mine are really good, and when my folks get home from work they'll find me on their back step with my tongue hanging out and scratching at the door to get in. It's so hot out here, at least, that's what they think.
Max and I know better, but we won't tell.
Dog Days of Summer, phooey.

Many thanks to the Senior Writing Group that meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10:15 AM at the Holliston Senior Center for submitting a favorite to the Holliston Reporter every month. We look forward to another good read soon!
That is story to love. I love dogs that communicate. Truth is they do but we don't take time to hear them. Lauri KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
