Local Students Find a Haven at ABT

by Krista Harper 8/2/2010

Local Students Find a Haven at ABT (Blyn poses in front of her Hummer, which, she says, is probably her trademark in Holliston. In 2008, Blyn pulled her Hummer around the parking lot of ABT for MetroWest Daily News. The video is available on YouTube.) For most small business owners, the first few years of operation are a struggle. In the constant uphill battle to stay in the black, most small-scale entrepreneurs don’t have much time to go for a jog, nevermind win national powerlifting competitions. The nonagenarian moved to Holliston as a toddler and 96 years later, she’s still here – and still active in the community. Once a week, she volunteers at the Congregational Church’s clothes closet, where she sorts and prices new items. Though she is still legally able to drive, she voluntarily gave up driving about a year ago, Vernon says. She just doesn’t need to anymore, she explains, with her sons nearby to help her get around when it’s necessary. These days, Vernon needs hearing aids and uses a cane to get around her house, but her easy smile may hold a clue to her longevity. She says she doesn’t really know why she’s lived so long, but she adds, “It helps to have a sense of humor!”
